Girls on track 2018 – 2019

On the 21st of July I entered the Girls on Track pre competition where all the girls had to drive on a small racing track and also do some slalom. Here you were not allowed to make mistakes or hit something on the track, and it also needed to go as fast as you can. And all the girls who entered also had to answer a lot of questions.

A few weeks later I got the message that I was invited for the second part of the Dutch Girls on Track competition. This was held on the 23rd of October 2018. We had to do several things, like running 15 minutes, giving a speech about what you have done or achieved so far and why you would like to enter the Girls on Track. And we also had to race against each other in the rental karts of Kartcentre Lelystad.

There was a team who decided who was at the last 6 to participate in the last round. I was invited. I seems I did the slalom very quick and did not hit any of the obstacles on the track. I became 3rd that day. Which meant, I got to go to Le Mans in France in March 2019 to race against all other Girls on Track from all other European countries. I was really surprised and overwhelmed but most of all very happy.

On the 7th of March 2019 we travelled at night from the Knaf Houten to Le Mans by a luxury van. We stopped early in the morning at Brussels to pick up the Belgium girls. We arrived early afternoon at the FFSA Le Mans. Where we all received a sports bag filled with goods like a suit, gloves, helmet, water bottle etc. We also got to meet the instructors. We got to do the fitting in the go-karts. As we there were two drivers per go-kart. As well as two mechanics per go-kart. The go-karts were brand new. And there was also a brand new tire brand for the go-karts. Yokohama. Mister Yokohama himself was also joining this weekend.

Here we also had to do a speech one by one. In school I made a piston out of wood which I brought to show them. I had to explain in English why I wanted to become a racing driver. I also made a booklet which I handed over. The Dutch girls were the only ones bringing a booklet which showed what we achieved. They told us that we were very well prepared.

The only thing I found a pity was, there was not a real race. As these go-karts had to be pushed to get started, they decided not to have the race. On the 10th of March we got to know who the finalist were. Nina was one of them. She got it well deserved.

Unfortunately I was not at the last 6 finalists. But I was very proud I came this far. I was only 13 years old, the youngest who entered this competition. And it was not easy traveling at night to get there. Having dinner every evening at 21.00 or even 21.30, going to bed every night between 23.00 and 24.00 hours. And getting up at 6.00 to get breakfast and being ready for the fitness at 7.00 in the morning and having the everyday class at least till 18.30 in the afternoon. French people seem to have their dinners very late. ? But I would not wanted to miss it for the world.
